Just finished this very insightful book on leadership principles based upon the wisdom, practices, and humor of President Abraham Lincoln. He truly was one of our greatest American presidents who was guided by his single vision "to preserve the union". Some believe it was divine intervention that he was our president during the Civil War. Professor Jay Winik has another wonderful work entitled "April 1865" which goes into the benevolent character of Lincoln who truly wanted the South to return to the Union free of violence, executions, and vengeance. Robert E. Lee expressed that he chose to surrender due what he perceived as Lincoln's goodness and compassion.
As a youth, when Lincoln beat his opponents in a wrestling match, he would help his vanquished foe up from the ground and referred to this as a practice to "let them up easy". This was desire for the South to "let them up easy".
